Travel contests and campaigns often involve prizes consisting of hotel stays, vacation getaways or some cool merchandise. Others feature offerings that provide the selected winners with a different kind of travel experience — a skillset that can be added to their resumes. Here are three of them currently seeking applications.

Campspot’s ‘Chief Outdoor Officer’

Campspot, a travel booking site for camping, glamping and RV resorts across the United States, is looking for a “ Chief Outdoor Officer.”

The company has created a three-month position to give a chosen applicant the opportunity to spend this entire time outdoors on paid time off. However, the position has one job requirement. You must love camping.

The role of Campspot Chief Outdoor Officer comes with a $10,000 travel stipend, a $2,000 monthly salary and a virtual assistant to handle any real-world to-do lists. This summertime COO will also have access to their choice of the best of Campspot’s selection of more than 200,000 tents, RV or glamping campsites.

“Our travelers have told us they’re eager to explore new places and travel even more frequently this summer, but we also know that it can be hard to prioritize that time between the realities of work, the mile-long to-do list, kids’ activities, and the everyday hustle,” said Campspot’s Chief Marketing Officer Erin Stender, in an email.

According to Stender, applicants must submit their funniest “Out of Office” email reply, at a maximum of 150 words, by June 30, 2023, by 11:59 pm CT. They also must be 21 years of age or older to apply. The winner will be selected and notified by July 14, 2023.

Visit Greater Palm Springs’ ‘Meet The Mentors Program’

While more of a program than a promotion, Visit Greater Palm Springs “Meet The Mentors Program” is designed to help aspiring travel writers jump-start their careers through this new project.

Now through June 16, 2023, aspiring writers can apply for a chance to participate this mentorship happening in Greater Palm Springs in September 2023.

According to Colleen Pace, chief sales and marketing officer for Visit Greater Palm Springs, this mentorship reflects how travel storytelling continues to evolve from “things to do” guides, to more in-depth reporting on growing interests such as responsible travel, local businesses and community involvement.

Pace added that Greater Palm Springs has many stories of its own, including old Hollywood glamour, narratives of indigenous cultures, and an arts and culture scene, among others.

“This desert oasis is the perfect destination for a journalist mentor program, where seasoned reporters and aspiring wordsmiths come together to uncover the power of storytelling,” said Pace.

Each of the five chosen applicants will be paired with and advised by an experienced travel journalist amid a customized Greater Palm Springs trip. They will also have the opportunity to get their stories published on the Visit Greater Palm Springs blog.

Five curated trips in Greater Palm Springs will take place during the weekends of September 15 and 22. Applicants should rank their top area of travel interest to best match them with an itinerary (and mentor) that is best suited to them.

The mentors will consist of freelancers and on-staff writers and editors linked to various regional, national and niche media outlets.

“We wanted to ensure that a variety of different types of journalists were reflected so that mentees can get a feel for the various paths available to them in a journalism career,” explained Pace.

Applicants of all backgrounds and abilities are encouraged but they must be at least 18 years old and live in the United States. Apply through this link by midnight PST on June 16, 2023. Selected participants will be notified by June 23, 2023.
