Are natural perfumes the way of the future?

The age of the celebrity perfume line is over: these days, it’s all about natural scents.

There is a rising trend for health-conscious consumers ditching synthetic perfumes in favour of eco-friendly alternatives that are kind to the environment and are free from chemical nasties.

But Perth-based French indie perfumer Delphine Fant is going one step further.

Rather than simply offering a line of ready-made fragrances, her brand Gandha Temple facilitates workshops so guests can custom-make their own signature scent that is both organic and cruelty-free.

Fant says people are often surprised to learn what can be in their mainstream perfume, saying some commercial fragrances contain “a chemical cocktail of harmful substances, anything from endocrine disruptors to . . . allergens and irritants”.

“When you have a natural fragrance, not only is it free of any toxic chemicals but it can be quite functional. The ingredients we use in natural perfumery come from plants, herbs and flowers with holistic benefits. It is a mix of aromatherapy and the art of perfumery; not just something that simply smells good,” she says.

It’s not just individuals who are lining up for Gandha Temple’s blends.

A growing number of brands, studios and stores are engaging Fant to create a bespoke scent for their space, so customers forge an instant emotional connection.

She says not to underestimate how significant a signature scent can be.

“Scent is a very personal experience,” Fant says.

“We make memories through our sense of smell. We live our lives through scent, yet it is underrated – people don’t realise how important it is to remember a time, place or person.”

A portion of profits from all Gandha Temple sales are donated to ocean conservation projects that help restore coral reefs.
