Man of Steel came out eight years ago and brilliantly rebooted the story of DC’s Superman with a new face of Henry Cavill. The movie came a year after Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy ended and gave DC’s film division a completely distinct introduction under Zack Snyder’s directorial command. Apart from a darker and more character-oriented story, the film was well appreciated for its special effects and a more humane portrayal of Kal-El/Superman. The success of Man of Steel prompted DC and Warner Bros. to launch a cinematic universe with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, while also releasing a slate of films to be released over the course of five years, including a Man of Steel sequel.
However, Zack Snyder’s plans for DCEU failed due to creative differences with the studio and Henry Cavill’s return as Superman in a solo film never came through. But, that doesn’t mean that Cavill has given up on the character. Recently in an interview with Lorraine, while promoting his upcoming Netflix series, The Witcher S2, Cavill expressed his interest in reprising his role.
Upon being asked about what he has done with the outfit, Cavill said,
I do still have the outfit.
And to add up to the hype and get fans curious for his return, Cavill revealed,
Just in case, yes I do, yes I do. Ready and waiting for the phone calls.
Cavill has been pretty vocal about his feelings in regard to playing Superman in DC Extended Universe and has earlier admitted to being open to reprising his role in a sequel to Man of Steel; he didn’t hesitate or pull his words back in this interview as well. Continuing to praise the opportunity he landed with Man of Steel, he added:
You look back and you think, ‘What a wonderful opportunity. Even if I were to stop acting tomorrow, and go live on a yacht or a steamboat or travel the Med… I can still look back and say I’ve worn a cape and leaped about the place and entertained some people.
Henry Cavill’s last appearance as Superman in the DC Extended Universe has been in the HBO Max’s cul-de-sac event, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which portrayed a better rendition of his character in continuation to the franchise in comparison to Justice League (2017), which brought upon the actor a miserable mustache disaster. If Zack Snyder’s Justice League is considered canon, the last we know of Henry’s Clark Kent is that the Son of Krypton was revived by the Mother Boxes and was once again settled back in the society after helping the League defeat Steppenwolf. However, the danger on the planet still lurks as he is bound to turn to Darkseid and destroy the human race and their planet after succumbing to the Anti-Life Equation.
After the said sequence, neither there has been any involvement of Cavill with any of the DCEU’s entries nor there has been any official statement from the studio on a potential film focusing on Cavill’s iteration of Superman. Earlier this year, numerous rumors escalated about Cavill being replaced as Superman. It was further amplified when The Suicide Squad’s director James Gunn admitted that his film’s character, DuBois/Bloodsport (Idris Elba) could’ve shot a different Superman (of which the director claimed he had no idea of).
Despite these hot debates, Cavill is loved for giving audiences such a compelling and never-seen-before story about a favorite comic book character. Fans still demand to release a sequel focusing on a character, which Snyder wanted to include Brainiac in. As for Cavill, though he waits to answer the right call from Warner Bros., he seems satisfied with the opportunity he had and looks forward to other acting endeavors he is being approached with.
Would you like to see Henry Cavill return as Superman in DCEU? If yes, what super-villain would you put him against this time?
