In a new video for R.E.M. beauty, Ariana Grande jokes about her early-career “old self,” and specifically her trademark cat-eye eyeliner and over-lined lips she almost always wore throughout the 2010s.
“Me to old me who wouldn’t dare be seen without a thick cat eye and an overdrawn lip,” reads text imposed over a video of Grande doing her makeup in the present-day with her new blonde hair. As Grande applies liner, she lip-syncs audio from Keeping Up With The Kardashians, in which Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian go back and forth on whether or not Jenner’s makeup is “too smokey.”
“I’ve been doing my homework, and I want to talk to you about something,’” Grande mouths as Jenner while applying the “thick cat eye and overdrawn lip.” Present-day Ari then mimics Kardashian asking her mom: “Do you think your eyes are a little too smoky for every day?”
The clip then cuts back to Grande in her heavier, classic glam, who mouths along to Jenner’s response: “Yeah, I’m going through a phase. Is that okay with you?”
“Who else knows the feeling?” the singer captioned the photo. “Makeup makes all the difference…but we’ll never get enough of At The Borderline Eyeliner marker or pencil.”

As expected, the internet is obsessed with the video—what’s better than celebs poking fun at themselves? And obviously because of Grande’s connection to Kardashian: The stars were both in very public relationships with Pete Davidson. Women supporting women and exes supporting exes—we love to see it.
Whether you’re still proudly wearing 2010s-era cat-eye eyeliner or are simply going “through a phase” like Jenner, you can create a smoky everyday look with Ariana Grande’s must-have liners below.
