Changing colors according to its position in light and space, Armitron’s psychedelic, elegant and PRISMATICA™ watch features iridescent ion plating, rainbow-iridescent bezel and one-of-a-kind dial that changes color as time trips onward. (Iridescence is a phenomenon during which surface color appears to change with the angle of viewing or illumination, and it’s caused by an optical effect rather than by pigmentation.) The word is derived from Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow. The Latin suffix ‘-escent’ means having a tendency towards something. Whilt the PRISMATICA™ does indeed embody a tendency towards the rainbow, this is a relatively rare and beautiful feat for a watch.
Shifting gradient blue and green hues animates the changing play of color on the PRISMATICA™ dial.

The PRISMATICA™ qualifies as trippy-chic as its band glows with the iridescence of abalone shells, peacock feathers, pearls and opals. Alive with a shifting play of colors and tones that change according to available light and the observer’s location, the PRISMATICA™, designed by Hannah Labowitz, is a beautiful breakthrough watch that also serves as functional jewelry.
Armitron’s trippy-chic PRISMATICA™ watch is also available with a steel-colored band.

The ion plating technology of the PRISMATICA™ embodies one of the most advanced surface finishing processes available because it forms a deep and strong chemical bond with the metal rather than merely coating it. Because of these material and chemical differences, the PRISMATICA™ ion plating is more vibrant, resilient and durable than the surface coatings of traditional watch bands or cases. As many know from experience, these are easily rubbed off from contact with skin or scratched by computers and other equipment used in daily life. For those who want to wear a super-stylish watch without fear of damaging it during work or play, the PRISMATICA™ fills the bill, and its visual allure makes it a conversation starter.

Between its sleek and minimal design, unusual iridescence and color-changing dial, the PRISMATICA™ is one of the most highly collectible watches of 2023. Having recently worn the PRISMATICA™ during seven-mile hikes in sunny, hot weather, clearing brush, hitting the gym and falling asleep, this writer can vouch for the integrity of the watch’s plating, design and durability. What’s more, as the timepiece is smoothly textured, lightweight and fitted with an ergonomically comfortable band, the PRISMATICA™ is comfortable enough to sleep in.

The PRISMATICA™ is a self-winding analogue movement, and all of its internal mechanisms are made of steel. (For those who dig details: An automatic, or self-winding mechanical watch features a rotor that’s powered by the kinetic energy generated by the wearer’s wrist in motion. As the wrist moves, it automatically moves the rotor, which, as it swings, winds the main spring inside its barrel and stores the energy needed to power the watch’s movement.)
Other prime PRISMATICA™ essentials: it’s water resistant up to 99 feet or 30 meters and has a seven-inch long, nickel compliant and rainbow-iridescent metal band that is 16 by 14 millimeters wide. While the watch has a mineral crystal and the nine-millimeter thick metal alloy case is 40 millimeters long, its lug width is 16 millimeters. Whether you call it Mermaidcore, post-hippie horology or a trippy 21st century timepiece, the PRISMATICA™ springs from Armitron’s and its parent company E. Gluck Corporation’s adventurous visions plus their shared commitments to color, technological advances and value for money. (The watch retails for a cool $70.00.) As Marisol Tamaro, Chief Marketing Officer of E. Gluck Corporation related in an email, “The color-changing effect of the Prismatica is an attempt to capture the adventurous spirit of something futuristic and hopeful. It’s a special spark of joy that’s ever changing and unique depending on the time and place of the wearer.”
