Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has declined to comment on growing reports linking him with the Tottenham job but admits it would be hard to resist a move to the Premier League.

The Dutch coach is emerging as the leading candidate to take over at Spurs, who have been looking for a new permanent manager to succeed Antonio Conte for the best part of two months.

Slot lifted the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord last weekend in just his second season at the club, playing a very exciting brand of football along the way, but he would not be drawn on the rumours linking him with a move to north London.

Responding to the increasing Tottenham links, Slot said on Friday: ‘Now I have to give you the same answer that I just gave to the Dutch media, that we are here for the game on Sunday instead of talking about this, because every answer I give, in respect of your question, will bring up extra questions.

‘So when it comes to Feyenoord, this morning already we were working on plans for during the summer and after the summer, so it just continues like that because I still have a remaining contract for two years.’

Asked if he is aware that he is now the frontrunner to take over at Spurs, Slot replied: ‘That’s a question or is that for you to tell me? I just said to your [Dutch] colleagues, “Next question” but I already gave a few times an answer to a certain question but like I said, this is not the moment to talk about this.

‘You can continue keeping asking the same questions over and over again, but the answer is every time the same. We are here for the game on Sunday. You’ve asked some questions about how we experienced being champions, it’s quite normal that I answer those questions, but all the other ones are not for this moment.’

On whether he would like to test himself in the Premier League, Slot continued: ‘When it comes to Holland, the next step will not be at another club in Holland. If that is the next step I’ve failed completely in the upcoming few years.

‘So the normal next step would be to go abroad and I’ve always said that the best league in the world is the Premier League.

‘But when it comes to Italy, you see now that there are a few clubs who are in every European final as well so there are more countries where it’s interesting to go to in the future but the Premier League is the biggest league in the world that is clear.’

Asked if he’s a coach who enjoys a challenge and is ambitious, he continued: ‘I think every coach has both and I have proved that I like to go for a challenge when I was at AZ and I came to Feyenoord.

‘Everybody two years ago said how on earth can you go from a club where there’s such a good structure towards a club where everybody – especially two journalists in the front row – were saying it was going to be a tough moment to step in.

‘So that was already a challenge and we took that, not only me the complete staff, and that’s why I’m privileged to say now that we’re the champions of Holland.’
