Arnold Schwarzenegger might be one of the strongest stars in Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean he won’t run from a fight. Especially when it involves … chess.

“Arnold was running from me because I don’t think he likes losing in public,” Schwarzenegger’s FUBAR co-star Milan Carter says with a laugh during an interview with Postmedia. “He would talk about how great he was, so I said, ‘Let’s play.’ He kept ducking me, but one day I burst into his trailer at lunch and I said, ‘Arnold, it’s time.’ We sat down and I whooped him. But he told everyone. I didn’t even need to brag.”

“He loves to kick my butt in chess,” jokes Schwarzenegger’s Terminator: Dark Fate pal Gabriel Luna, who also appears in the new show. “Finally, we found someone who can kind of put Arnold in his place.”

Schwarzenegger’s first foray into scripted television finds the 75-year-old action man playing Luke Brunner, a secret CIA operative nearing retirement who learns that his daughter Emma (played by Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbero) has also been surreptitiously working for the agency for years as well.

As the two slowly learn about who each of them really is, the father-daughter duo is dispatched on a mission to stop a madman (played by Luna) hell-bent on trying to secure weapons of mass destruction.

Schwarzenegger was intrigued to dive into his first-ever TV series because the premise was inspired by his 1994 spy-comedy True Lies.

True Lies is one of my favourite movies that I’ve done,” he tells Postmedia. “I think that the opportunities to do a TV series were not really available back in the ’80s and ’90s like they are now … So it was a great concept to do this as a series.”

For Schwarzenegger’s young castmates, who grew up watching him in the Terminator films, Kindergarten Cop, Twins and the first Predator movie, they had heaps of praise for how the actor and former bodybuilder preached teamwork and hard work on the set.

Barbaro says it was “wild” to be teaming up with Schwarzenegger after working with Tom Cruise on last summer’s Maverick. “We were doing stunts in a different way every week,” she says.

“They say never meet your idols because you’ll be disappointed, but Arnold was nothing like that,” says Carter, who plays Schwarzenegger’s nerdy right-hand man Barry on the eight-episode series. “I remember in my chemistry read, I did two takes and I wasn’t happy with them. I said, ‘Yo Arnold, can we give it another shot?’ And he said, ‘What kind of bodybuilder would I be if I didn’t like reps?’ So even at my chemistry read — before I got the role — he was willing to make it right. It is truly a dream come true.”

Comedian Fortune Feimster, who plays CIA spy Roo on the show, loved how eager the Hollywood icon was to trade one-liners with her on the action-packed set of the Toronto-shot series last summer.

“To see someone at that level, who has accomplished so much, I was really inspired seeing how he handled that and how he treated people,” Feimster says. “He never treated us as anything other than friends, and you don’t always get that when you’re working with someone at that kind of level.”

Luna, who takes a villainous turn as Boro, was excited to re-team with Schwarzenegger after they worked together on the last Terminator film.

“We met during Terminator and took a shine to one another and spent a lot of time together the last four, five years,” Luna says.

“So it really was cool to get back into it in a professional sense. We take bike rides sometimes together, but this is us in work mode. We did a lot of combat in Terminator.

“This was more of a chess match.”

Travis Van Winkle, who plays the clean-cut spy Aldon, says “magic happens” when Schwarzenegger hears the word, “Action!”

“He shows up and everyone perks up and it’s a playful atmosphere. It never feels like work. We got to hang out with a legend and become friends with him. I want to do it again and again and again.”

But there was a little work, Van Winkle concedes. After he read the FUBAR script and saw there was an episode where he’d have to show off his abs, he was inspired to hit the gym extra hard to make sure he was ready when the camera zoomed in for a closeup.

“That was a lot of chicken breast and dehydration,” Van Winkle says, laughing.

“I put a lot of effort into my fitness on this show because I was working with Arnold Schwarzenegger. So when I came to set, I wanted to be at my best and I put a lot of work into that moment.”
