Arsenal have formally offered William Saliba a contract extension but there has not been an agreement on a new deal yet, according to reports.

Saliba has established himself as an important player this season having waited three years to make his Arsenal debut following three separate loans in Ligue 1.

The France international centre-back has started all 12 of Arsenal’s Premier League games this term, helping the Gunners to the top of the table.

He massively impressed on loan at Marseille last season, playing 52 games as they finished runners-up in Ligue 1 to qualify for the 2022-23 Champions League.

Saliba also helped Marseille reach the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League in a strong season for the club.

The 21-year-old was crowned Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

He has since returned to north London but he does not have too long left on his current contract, which is due to expire in 2024.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are now in ‘formal negotiations’ with Saliba over a new deal and the Gunners have ‘made an offer’ to him, but there has not been an agreement yet.

Saliba was recently lauded by fellow Frenchman Frank Leboeuf, who feels he could be France’s No.1 centre-back at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

‘Saliba will definitely be in the France squad and should be in the starting line-up especially now given Raphael Varane’s injury,’ he told Fair Betting Sites.

‘He’s gone up two or three levels since coming back to Arsenal from Marseille this season.

‘Presnel Kimpembe is injured, Varane is injured too so yes there are other defenders, but Saliba is the most consistent right now.

‘If the World Cup was tomorrow William Saliba is France’s No.1 central defender for me.’
