Arsenal ‘handed exciting Xavi Simons opportunity’ as Granit Xhaka nears exit

Arsenal could instantly replace outgoing midfielder Granit Xhaka this summer amid reports that Xavi Simons will be offered to the north London club. The PSV Eindhoven wonderkid has taken the Eredivisie by storm this season, alerting top clubs to his talent and earning a call-up to the Dutch national team.

Simons, 20, spent time with Barcelona’s famed youth academy before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2019. Limited senior action in France saw the Amsterdam-born midfielder return to his homeland last summer, where he has put any concerns about his ability to succeed in professional football beyond doubt.

Able to play in the middle of the park or on either flank, Simons has notched a staggering 24 direct goal contributions in 32 league matches so far this season. And with a year of guidance from Premier League hero and PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, the youngster could well continue his rampant streak in front of goal.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal will be given the chance to sign Simons at the end of the season.

The Netherlands international recently joined a new agency which has strong links to the Gunners. And while PSG reportedly inserted a buy-back clause that would allow them to bring him back for just £10million, there has been no approach made thus far.

Either way, there is no guarantee that Simons would be keen on a return to the Parisians, where he previously found game time hard to come by. Over in north London, manager Mikel Arteta could have a ready-made slot for him in the squad.

Indeed, Xhaka is poised to leave the Emirates Stadium after his best-ever season for the club. Having been one of Arteta’s strongest performers this campaign, his fall-out with supporters back in 2019 is now a distant memory, even if Manchester City look set to pip Arsenal to the Premier League title.

Simons has only been given his first regular taste of senior football in 2022/23, but he has been known to top sides since he was a schoolboy in Barca’s academy, when footage of him obliterating opponents went viral.
