The left-back joined the Gunners from Benfica last summer but struggled for consistency when tasked with deputising for Kieran Tierney.
Now Oleksandr Zinchenko has arrived from Manchester City, Tavares’ playing time would likely lessen, especially given Tierney is also ahead of him in the pecking order.
Mikel Arteta has already conceded his squad is too large as the club look to offload players before the end of the transfer window.
‘We have a large squad so we have to make some decisions as well on the players that we’re not going to be using consistently and be fair and straight with them,’ Arteta said during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
‘That’s a process that is going to start very soon as well.’
‘We have to [move players on],’ the Spaniard added. ‘We have a big squad and now we have to make things happen.’
Now, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal and Marseille have reached a full agreement over a loan deal for Tavares, with no option to buy included.
The 22-year-old is set for a medical on Friday ahead of the proposed move to the Ligue 1 side.
In terms of incomings, the Gunners have signed Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner.
The north London club have also been linked with a move for Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.
