The 32-year-old played the entirety of Gabon’s 1-0 win over Libya on Friday night, netting the crucial goal from the penalty spot to briefly keep his side’s slim hopes of qualifying for Qatar 2022 alive.
However, at the very end of the match Aubameyang went down and was holding his right calf and head before being taken off the field on a stretcher.
He quickly allayed fears he had done anything serious by streaming an Instagram live from the victorious dressing room after the game, where he was seen jumping around in celebration with his teammates.
But now Gabon have confirmed that Aubameyang will play no part against Egypt on Tuesday, creating fresh fears that he may have picked up an injury last time out.
Equally, after Gabon’s win Egypt secured the solitary point they needed to secure top spot in the group, rendering today’s game a dead rubber and eliminating Aubameyang and his teammates from qualification.
It is possible that Aubameyang has simply been left out because the match no longer carries any importance, though his teammate Bruno Manga suggested he had picked up a niggle.
‘I expect a good game between us and Egypt. The Egyptian national team has a lot of good players,’ the former Cardiff City defender said.
‘We came here to leave with a good result and we will do our best to return to Gabon with the three points.
‘Aubameyang will miss the game due to injury, and the Egyptian national team is strong, it’s enough to say that they have Mohamed Salah, it will be a difficult match.
‘We will focus on the Africa Cup of Nations after the match with Egypt, our fans expect a lot from us in the tournament.
‘Egypt deserved the qualification to the final round, but there are a lot of good teams in Africa, like Senegal and Algeria. I don’t know who will be able to reach the World Cup.’
Losing Aubameyang would be a huge blow for Arsenal, who travel to Anfield on Saturday to take on Liverpool, though the Merseysiders have several injury issues of their own to deal with after Andy Robertson picked up a problem in Scotland’s win over Denmark.
