Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been ruled out Gabon’s Africa Cup of Nations clash with Ghana due to minor heart issues following a bout of Covid-19.

Aubameyang, 32, tested positive for coronavirus upon arrival in Cameroon last week and subsequently missed Gabon’s 1-0 victory over Comoros on Monday, his country’s opening game in Group C.

There had been faint hopes Aubameyang would return to feature against Ghana this evening, but the forward was again omitted from Gabon’s matchday squad along with Ittihad Tanger’s Axel Meye and Nice’s Mario Lemina.

Gabon head coach Patrice Neveu also tested positive prior to tonight’s game and did not travel to Yaounde’s Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo.

‘According to the CAF medical commission, the players Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Axel Meye and Mario Lemina, just out of Covid, cannot take part in this match,’ a statement read.

‘The examinations show cardiac issues. CAF did not want to take any risks.’

According to The Athletic, Arsenal’s doctors have spoken with Gabon’s medical team and are satisfied that Aubameyang’s condition is not serious.

It’s believed Aubameyang has trained as normal for the last two days was not considered for Gabon’s clash with Ghana as a precaution.

Speaking earlier this week, Aubameyang said he was feeling okay and ‘trying to keep in shape as much as possible’ while working on his fitness while in isolation.

‘I got the opportunity to still be able to work in my room. I got a bike and made a circuit, trying to keep in shape as much as possible,’ he told the Gabon Football Federation’s Facebook page.

‘It’s not going to be easy, because it’s not the same as match rhythm or proper training but we’ll get it done.

‘We’re going to play a very difficult opponent who needs to win the game, so we’ll have to be serious like we were in the first game. I know we’ll have our chances.’

There remains uncertainty over Aubameyang’s future back in England, with the veteran attacker stripped of the captain’s armband after reporting late for duty from an authorised trip abroad.

Aubameyang has since been frozen out of Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans and has not been involved in the Gunners’ last eight matches in all competitions.

The former Borussia Dortmund star is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season and it appears likely he’s played his last match for the north London giants.

Asked why Aubameyang was not selected for Arsenal’s Boxing Day clash with Norwich, Arteta told reporters: ‘He wasn’t selected for today’s match.

‘We’ll take it game by game. That was the decision.’
