Arsenal transfer chief Edu reacts to £200million spending spree

Arsenal sporting director Edu has responding to an Arsenal fan on Instagram praising him for masterminding a £200million spending spree.

The once frugal north London club are set to splash the cash again this summer in an effort to build on last season’s second place finish.

Arsenal led the way for the majority of the campaign, but simply ran out of steam during the run-in following a spate of injuries to key players.

The likes of William Saliba, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu hardly featured during the closing stages, while Bukayo Saka’s form deteriorated as a consequence of playing almost every minute of a grueling season.

In an attempt to arm Mikel Arteta with a squad that compete with City over 38 games, Arsenal are set to smash their transfer record for Declan Rice.

After seeing two bids rejected earlier this month, the Gunners have ceded to the demands of their east London rivals and will make the 24-year-old a £100million player.

Talks over the structure of the deal are ongoing, but the England international is expected to be confirmed as an Arsenal player when he returns from holiday in Dubai.

Ajax defender Jurrien Timber’s arrival is also imminent, while the £70m signing of Kai Havertz from Chelsea was confirmed earlier this week.

Responding to a fan, Edu posting a string of laughing emojis when it was suggested he may even explore the option of following up deal for Havertz, Timber and Rice by making a move for Kylian Mbappe.

While that might seem farfetched, the Brazilian has certainly met Arteta’s request to ‘nail’ the summer transfer window.

Speaking back in May, the Arsenal manager said: ‘We have to nail everything that we do and we have to seek excellence in everything that we touch and participate in, to have a big impact at the club.

‘I think the competition is going to be even harder than this season. In my opinion, it’s been the hardest of the 22 years that I’ve been in this league.

‘In order to do that, we have a really promising plan. We may have to reflect a little bit, take a step back, make sure this is the right one and go again with more determination and hunger in the tummies to do even better.’
