Arsenal could see one player depart quickly in the January transfer window thanks to Jose Mourinho. Ainsley Maitland-Niles is desperate to leave while AS Roma are ready to make a loan offer soon until the end of the season.
And Mikel Arteta is close to seeing the transfer go through already with Maitland-Niles on the verge of finally getting his wish.
Arsenal have plenty of business to conduct in January with several players linked with exits.
Among them include Eddie Nketiah, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whose future is up in the air after he was stripped of the captaincy.
But one that appears to have been forgotten is Maitland-Niles, who has made just four starts in the Premier League this season.
This is despite the fact he was desperate to leave in the summer after being worried by a lack of game-time and had a deadline day move to Everton fall through.
However, the England international is close to finally getting his way after ESPN reported that AS Roma are keen on a loan deal until the end of the season.
Jose Mourinho has had success with his pickings from the Premier League in the shape of Tammy Abraham and Rui Patricio.
And letting Maitland-Niles go could help Arteta ramp up his own transfer ambitions with links to the likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Tyler Adams.
Game-time has remained tough to come by with his last appearance coming on 20 November against Liverpool in a 4-0 defeat.
The England international has been largely left out of the squad under Arteta and was furious after being refused a departure in the summer.
The 24-year-old even tried to force through a move on social media when he posted on Instagram: “All I want to do is go where I’m wanted and where I’m going to play.”
Arteta held clear-the-air talks with Maitland-Niles, who has come up through the Arsenal academy, to convince him to stay.
Everton remain interested in the player, ESPN report, while the Gunners manager has admitted that there could be some movement in the January transfer window at the Emirates.
“If you can tweak what you need to in that period, which is not easy, it would be really helpful,” Arteta said.
“We are working on that to see the necessities we can have and whether we can find the right solutions.”
