As Omicron symptoms appear to be similar to those of a common cold, it’s more important than ever to get tested

We’re all used to feeling a little under-the-weather in the winter months, but given the growing concern about the Omicron variant of coronavirus, it’s hard to know exactly what’s making us feel poorly.

This is made all the more confusing due to the fact that the symptoms of Omicron appear to be very similar to those of a common cold, or the flu. During an appearance on BBC 4’s Today programme, Professor Tim Spector – one of the founders of the Zoe Covid Study app, which tracks cases of coronavirus across the UK –  described the following as the five main symptoms of the Omicron variant:

  • headaches
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
  • fatigue
  • sneezing

In an interview with Women’s Health, Prof Tim Spector added that the following symptoms of coronavirus could also signify an infection:

He further explained that, “cold-like symptoms are the commonest” symptoms of the Omicron variant.

According to the NHS, symptoms of flu include:

  • an aching body
  • a sudden high temperature of 38C or above
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • a dry cough
  • a sore throat
  • a headache
  • difficulty sleeping
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhoea or tummy pain
  • feeling sick and being sick

Clearly, there’s some crossover in symptoms between the Omicron variant and flu, including headaches, sore throats, and feeling tired/fatigued.

In a previous interview with GLAMOUR (prior to the emergence of Omicron), Dr. Daniel Cichi, a GP and medical advisor at Doctors 4 U, advised that the symptoms of a cold “usually tend to stay in the upper airways which means that you will most likely have nasal congestion, sneezing, and a sore throat.”
