Roma, who won the Europa Conference League last year, will face off with the German clubs twice in the space of seven days as the sides aim for Europa League final in Budapest on May 30. Roma reached the semis defeating Dutch side Feyenoord in the quarterfinals. They earlier defeated RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad in the knockout stages.
This is AS Roma’s second Europa League semis since 2021 as they were knocked out by Manchester United that season and may claim to be the favourite for the tie as they have won 10 of their last 11 European knockout matches under Mourinho.
However, their recent form in Serie A is a concern as the Italian side are without a in their last four games, including a 0-2 loss to Inter Milan at the home venue. They are now five points off the fourth spot with just four matches left to play.
Bayer Leverkusen, on the other hand, were on a 14-match unbeaten streak since Xabi Alonso took charge of the side earlier this year. The run included 10 wins but the streak ended with a 1-2 loss to Koln last Friday in Bundesliga.
The German side is currently sixth on the points table and in Europa League, they defeated Monaco, Ferencvaros and Union Staint-Gilloise to reach the semis after making a group stage exit in the Champions League with a third-place finish.
