The budget line is not anything new – it is a revised version of the Smart Price range. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons all have their own budget brands.
Among the hysteria surrounding Asda’s Just Essentials range, have people forgotten that budget supermarkets already exist? For example, Lidl and Aldi.
Birmingham Live decided to look at how the cost of a weekly shop would compare between Asda’s Just Essentials range and long-standing budget champion Aldi, to see which works out cheaper.
Surprisingly, an Asda Just Essentials shop of 20 items can be around £5 cheaper than what is widely regarded as the cheapest supermarket out there.
Although many items have clearly been price matched by the team behind Asda Just Essentials, there are a few products which cost much less, allowing Asda to run away with this one.
The fish fingers, beef lasagne and wheat bisks have three of the biggest differences, each costing more than a whole pound less than their equivalent.
That said, a few items are still cheaper in Aldi in case you have the time on your hands to visit two supermarkets. Yoghurts and bread are both still cheaper at Aldi.
It is fair to say Asda has knocked it out of the park with this one, and with 293 products in the budget line, including fresh meat, fish and poultry, bakery, frozen, cupboard staples and household products, it could not have come at a better time with the cost of living crisis.
