On the final ball of the 52nd over, Bairstow left alone a short ball wide of off and instantly walked out of the crease towards his partner Ben Stokes. Wicket-keeper Alex Carey showed great presence of mind and immediately dismantled the stumps with an underarm direct hit.

With Bairstow nowhere in the frame, Australian players immediately started celebrating. Bairstow and Stokes exchanged a few words with Australian fielders, however, the visitors were well within their rights to appeal for a run out as the ball was not dead when Bairstow left the crease in a carefree fashion.
Usually batters check with the keeper or players in the slip cordon to ensure the ball is dead. The brain fade moment from Bairstow saw him just walk outside the crease almost instantly after leaving the short delivery from Green.
Here’s is how Twitter has reacted to the bizarre run out dismissal of Bairstow
Bairstow is given out like this, smart thinking by Keeper or is it disgraceful, what do you think? #Ashes pic.twitter.com/vMRCcK7lNP

Bairstow furious because he didn’t know wicketkeepers were allowed to do that. #Ashes

What a bizarre way to go, Aussies next to us enjoyed that massively, guess Bairstow’s stupidity there is similar to Starc’s ‘slide ball along ground before his body stopped moving’
No appeal withdraw of course
Both will be talked about for years to come #ENGvsAUS #Ashes2023 pic.twitter.com/ZDYQhENkoB

Dozy from Bairstow, Carey alert and runs him out. Ball wasn’t dead #Ashes

What the hell was Bairstow doing? That is so stupid. NEVER LEAVE YOUR CREASE UNTIL THE BALL IS DEAD.

If the ball isn’t dead, the ball isn’t dead. Stay in your crease. Stay alert and switched on. Bairstow was none of that.

With Bairstow gone you’d have to think @CricketAus are about to go 2-0 up here.. ???? #Ashes2023

The ongoing second Test match also saw a controversy around Mitchell Starc’s catch of Ben Duckett which was ruled not out towards the end of Day 3.
