Ashes fans love England’s Stuart Broad ‘taking the p***’ out of Australia

England cricketer Stuart Broad was lapped up by supporters on Sunday for his sarcastic actions during the second Ashes test. The 37-year-old was not best pleased with a controversial turn of events that saw Jonny Bairstow run out by Australia.

One of the most contentious moments so far during the current Ashes series began with Bairstow ducking below a short ball. Australia’s Alex Carey then threw the ball towards the stumps, and while it was in the air, Bairstow started casually sauntering out of his crease.

A surreal moment then saw the ball hit the stumps with Bairstow unaware and in no man’s land. It was called out to spark a chorus of boos around Lord’s.

Shortly after Bairstow made way, Broad was spotted in heated conversation with Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne. Microphones also picked up a brief conversation with Carey, during which he said the controversial run-out is ‘all he will ever be remembered for’.

Broad then revved up the crowd after ducking under a ball from Pat Cummins, as he kept his bat firmly in the crease and sarcastically asked the Aussies behind him whether the ball was definitely dead.

The Lord’s crowd let out a huge cheer and those watching from home loved it too, with the social media reaction plentiful. “Stuart Broad taking the p***, wonderful entertainment,” wrote @geoffreytheido on Twitter.

With England aiming to avoid going 2-0 down in the series, the incident involving Bairstow understandably sparked fierce debate on social media, where Piers Morgan was among those to get involved.

“BOTTOM LINE: Bairstow was seeking zero advantage and everyone knows it,” he wrote. “Yes, it’s ‘in the rules’ but no, it’s not in the spirit of the game. Very surprised to see Pat Cummins not call him back.”
