Ashley Graham is embracing her post-twins body, and her honesty is giving others permission to do the same. The model, who welcomed twins Malachi and Roman in January 2022 (joining older brother Isaac), uploaded a naked (SFW) pic in which she grabs her stomach with both hands, showing that, after carrying three boys, this part of her is softer and stretchier than the rest—and that’s okay.
Graham didn’t caption the pic, but viewers got the message loud and clear. “????????????????????so beautiful – I love it,” wrote Jenna Lyons, former creative director for J.Crew. “Ladies how many can relate! NO CAPTION NEEDED! ❤️????,” added another fan. Another commented, “What every postpartum mom needs to see! ❤️❤️❤️”
Graham, one of the most famous plus-size models working today, has long been open about the good, the bad, and the growth that come with, well, being a woman in a body. In an essay for Glamour, she shared how her relationship to her body changed while she was pregnant with her twins.
“At 30 weeks, the stretch marks started to creep up. I thought to myself, Okay, Ashley, you can handle this. You already had a few, this is life. You are a champion for all kinds of bodies—who cares? This is going to be a great moment…. But then they started creeping up even more, and you could see them coming out of my panty line, and then beyond my belly button, and I melted…. I was bringing it up constantly to my team. I was like, ‘You don’t understand. I used to be a sex symbol, and now I am a baby-making machine and I have stretch marks up to my belly button. What the eff is happening?’” she recalled. Postbirth was a struggle as well, with Graham reflecting, “I had planned to be back at work after eight weeks, but I was a wreck, and when I saw myself in the mirror, I still felt like I looked pregnant. And yet I work in an industry that expects me to return to work in a body that has ‘snapped back’—a pressure that no woman, in any industry, deserves to feel. I have always fought against unfair and unrealistic standards and yet, if I am being completely honest, here I was, expecting myself to snap back.”
Having stretch marks above her belly button was a change Ashley Graham particularly struggled with, so we are so happy to see her showing them off in this latest post. Living in a changing body is messy and emotional, but I think we can all agree that being open about the reality of the situation is a great first step.
