The 23-year-old brought up his maiden Test hundred on Friday and scored 114 runs off 170 balls to forge a 208-run partnership with Usman Khawaja. The partnership is second-highest in the format by an Australia batting pair in India. Green’s attacking innings was studded with 18 boundaries.
He had joined Khawaja at a time when India could have clawed back in the match with the fifth wicket. However, the solid stand took the game far away from India as Australia ended up posting 480 runs in the first innings.
Ashwin, who dismissed Green in the 131st over of the match, has heaped praises on the youngster. Pointing towards the whooping money Green got in the IPL 2023 auction, Ashwin stated that the Indian cricket fraternity already had their eyes on the West Australia cricketer.
Ashwin praises Green
“I hope you tuned into the IPL auction, it just tells you how the Indian cricketing fraternity rates Cameron Green,” said Ashwin, in reference to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 where Mumbai Indians (MI) purchased Green for a whopping Rs 17.50 crore.
“I think he’s a fantastic player. Just the raw materials for a person as tall as him, lovely levers, good batting sense, can bowl and really hit the deck well, moves pretty well in the field.
“These are once-in-a-generation cricketers you are talking about.
“We come from different countries – India is very different. We can’t protect such players for a long period of time. It’s perform or perish.
“But in countries like Australia and England, they’re doing pretty well at (protecting players) and I expect Cameron Green to be a wonderful cricketer down the line,” the number one ranked Test bowler added.
Green has played a total of 20 Test matches (including the ongoing Test) so far and scored 1955 runs at an average of 37.64. He also has picked 23 wickets at an average of 30.87. In the 13 ODIs, he has picked 11 wickets and scored 290 runs at an average of 58. The right-hander has also played eight T20Is, scoring 139 runs at a strike rate of 173.75. He has picked five wickets with his medium-pacer bowling in the shortest format of the game.
