‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’ gets more content with ‘Ragnarok’ expansion and ‘Odyssey’ crossover

Although “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla” has been out for more than a year, the content Ubisoft plans to deliver is far from over. As the game enters year 2, Ubisoft revealed the game’s third expansion and a major crossover event.

The bigger of the two is the former, which is titled “Dawn of Ragnarok.” It takes place in the mythical lands of Norse mythology as Eivor takes a potion and wakes up as Odin. Developed by Ubisoft Sofia, this effort adds 36 hours of gameplay and introduces players to new areas, which add up to a third of the size of the original map.

From the looks of it, Eivor as Odin has a bevy of special abilities befitting the fantastical landscape. The protagonist can turn into a raven and assassinate enemies from above. The Norse being can use a special bracer to absorb enemy powers. That enables Odin to use ice weapons, resurrect fallen foes as allies and even turn fire into a weapon. The whole experience reminds me of Monolith’s “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.”

The goal of the campaign is to rescue Odin’s son, Balder. That adventure will take players through Asgard, Jotunheim and Svartalfheim. The “Dawn of Ragnarok” expansion is scheduled for release March 10, 2022 and will cost $39.99 as a separate purchase by all owners of the main game.

The second piece of content is a fascinating crossover between the protagonists of “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” and “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.” Yes, for the first time, characters from different eras of the main series games will meet face to face.

Players will need the base game of either title and they’ll experience a story with Eivor (male or female) and Kassandra. At first, the two are at odds, but learn to unite their efforts to save two islands from Isu artifacts. The locales are from their respective regions. This puts a fascinating twist on the “Assassin’s Creed” formula and will give fans another reason to head back to Ancient Greece or English Middle Ages.
