Aston Martin has made an assertive step towards electrification with the announcement of an innovative supply agreement with the leading electric vehicle technologies company, Lucid Group. This partnership is aimed at powering Aston Martin’s electrification strategy, a key component of their broader Racing. Green. sustainability strategy. With a total investment of over £2 billion in advanced technology, Aston Martin is setting a new standard for ultra-luxury high-performance electrified vehicles.
The strategic agreement, which was announced today at the London Stock Exchange, involves Lucid, an industry frontrunner in designing and manufacturing advanced electric powertrains and battery systems, providing Aston Martin with access to their electric vehicle technologies. This includes powertrain and battery technologies for Aston Martin’s forthcoming Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) platform.
This electrification initiative forms an integral part of Aston Martin’s broader Racing. Green. sustainability strategy, which plans to utilize a hefty investment of over £2 billion in cutting-edge technologies over the next five years, gradually shifting focus from internal combustion engines (ICE) to BEV technology.
According to Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin, the partnership with Lucid will significantly propel Aston Martin’s electrification strategy. He pointed out the unique advantage of accessing Lucid’s industry-leading technologies for Aston Martin’s future BEV products. The strategic collaborations with Lucid and Mercedes-Benz AG promise a solid foundation for Aston Martin’s electrification strategy. Furthermore, Aston Martin has embarked on the development of a brand new modular BEV platform that will underpin their future lineup of electrified models, spanning hypercars, sports cars, GTs, and SUVs. This platform will be launched in 2025, following the 2024 release of their first plug-in hybrid – the mid-engined supercar, Valhalla. By 2026, all new Aston Martin model lines will have an electrified powertrain option, with the core range aiming to be fully electrified by 2030.
Mercedes-Benz AG will continue providing Aston Martin with a variety of top-notch technologies. This includes powertrain and electric/electronic architectures for both current and future Aston Martin vehicles, encompassing internal combustion engine, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
The proposed agreement with Lucid will ensure Aston Martin’s access to industry-leading powertrain and battery systems technology. Roberto Fedeli, Chief Technology Officer of Aston Martin, believes this will allow the creation of a unique bespoke BEV platform, capable of supporting all future Aston Martin products. He also mentioned the expansion of their in-house powertrain capabilities to provide the thrilling performance and driving experience customers expect from Aston Martin.
Aston Martin’s shift from powerful internal combustion engines to hybrid and battery-electric powertrains represents a significant challenge. However, the partnership with Lucid’s advanced powertrain technology and Mercedes-Benz’s electronic architecture promises a future of sustainable, high-performance Aston Martins.
