Steam Deck has dominated the handheld PC market since launching in 2022. Its success seems to have inspired other major PC gaming companies to dive into the world of handhelds. Though the Steam Deck will likely be hard to top when it comes to performance for the price, Valve’s handheld will soon have a big-name competitor: the Asus ROG Ally. A Windows-based handheld gaming PC, the Asus ROG Ally is gearing up for a worldwide launch that “may be sooner than you expect.” Details on the device are still murky, but you can sign up for preorder notifications at Best Buy.
Pricing TBD
Unfortunately, much of the Asus ROG Ally remains a mystery. The company has given fans a few glimpses of the elusive device, but exact specifications (including GPU and processor) are still tightly under wraps. For now, it looks like the handheld PC will be equipped with a 7-inch, 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a customized AMD CPU + GPU combo comparable to the Ryzen 7000 series.
Again, most of these details are from speculation and early leaks, so until Asus reveals concrete details, the only thing we know for sure is what the handheld looks like. We also don’t have pricing details yet, but don’t expect for the Ally to launch at Steam Deck price points. That said, hopefully it’s not too much more expensive than Valve’s popular handheld.
An exact release date hasn’t been revealed, but based on the messaging from Asus thus far, it sure sounds like we won’t have to wait long at all. And based on the early hype, it’ll likely be a hot product–especially if it launches at a reasonable price. If you’re looking to snag one at launch, be sure to sign up for notifications–which only requires an email–as it’s likely quantities will be limited.
Don’t want to wait for the ROG Ally? Then consider picking up a Steam Deck, which is readily available to purchase directly from Valve. On the Windows handheld front, the Ally is joining a constantly growing market, including the very impressive and high-performing Ayaneo series of portable gaming PCs.
