Teachers at Hoover High School in Glendale got an eyeful on Monday morning, May 2 — an array of messages of love and support to kick off Teacher Appreciation Week.
Teachers were greeted with colorful chalk art displays, welcoming them with messages of support and gratitude in a project pulled together by the American Heart Association and Adventist Health Glendale.

“We partnered with the American Heart Association and we’ve been working on a bigger project with the school district built around wellness,” said Justin Henderson of Adventist Health, Glendale. “One of the places that we decided to start with was Teacher Appreciation Week.”
“We started with this chalk event over the weekend,” Henderson added. “We had volunteers come in on Saturday morning and write a lot of notes of love and appreciation and inspiration so it could be a surprise when teachers come in Monday morning and show them how much we care about them.”
In addition to the chalk art display on Monday, the teachers will also be treated to chair massages on Tuesday, a “sound oasis retreat” on Wednesday, health and well-being resources on Thursday and snacks on Friday.
The Heart Association dove into the project for teachers research shows that chronic stress, emotional distress, dissatisfaction and other forms of negative psychological health conditions can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, positive psychological health factors inclouding happiness, purpose and gratitude are good for the heart, the group said in a statement.
“We recognize how much teachers and students and families have been going through over the last few years,” Henderson said. “So we wanted to show some support.”
