Call it the only upside to climate change.
Krispy Kreme has declared today, Aug. 8, the beginning of pumpkin spice season — a full month earlier than last year. Yes, the marketing folks there are aware that the calendar says August, but they are banking on you getting into the proper frame of mind once you get your first whiff of the autumnal blend.
Shops nationwide are unveiling a new Pumpkin Spice Latte Swirl Doughnut (a pumpkin spice doughnut dipped in a pumpkin spice/sugar blend and topped with a swirl of vanilla and coffee buttercream) and a new Pumpkin Spice Iced Coffee (iced coffee blended with pumpkin pie sauce).
Those menu items will join Krispy Kreme’s traditional fall lineup of the Pumpkin Spice Original Glazed Doughnut, Pumpkin Spice Original Filled Cheesecake Doughnut, Pumpkin Spice Cake Doughnut and, of course, the drink that started it all, the Pumpkin Spice Latte — which is available hot, iced or frozen.
“Sure, pumpkin spice is generally associated with fall, but true fans of the flavor will agree that August is close enough,” Dave Skena, global chief brand officer for the company, said in announcing the early rollout.
The craze started by Starbucks has led to competitive launches ever since. Last year’s roll-out dates for pumpkin drinks were Aug. 19 for Dunkin’ Donuts, Aug. 25 for Starbucks, which invented the Pumpkin Spice Latte, or PSL as fans call it, and early September for Krispy Kreme.
What if you’re one of those who doesn’t like to drink pumpkin coffees until autumn actually arrives?
