ONE person has died and around 20 others are injured after the main stage at a Spanish festival buckled and collapsed.
Heavy winds brought part of the structure at Medusa Festival near Valencia crashing down in the early hours of this morning.
Organisers of the electronic dance event, which French DJ David Guetta was due to headline, this morning confirmed it was being suspended “with the aim of guaranteeing the security of spectators, staff and performers”.
The first confirmed fatality is believed to be a 28-year-old man.
Local reports suggest as many as 21 people could be injured, with nine understood to be in a serious condition and being treated at various hospitals in the area.
Several other heavy metallic structures, including the entrance billboard, are reported to have come down in the storm that brought about the chaos at the five-day festival in the popular resort town of Cullera.
Gusts, which hit last night, are said to have reached around 40mph.
The event, which was due to attract around 320,000 revellers across the week, was evacuated at around 4am.
Footage of the drama showed revellers trying to take refuge as a sandstorm engulfed the concert area, as well as police attending to one of the victims lying on the ground.
DJ David Guetta, Steve Aoki and Afrojack had been announced as some of the headline acts at this year’s festival, the first since the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Guetta, who has over 10 million albums and 65 million single sales globally, was due to perform today.
It was not immediately clear how long the festival, this year called the Medusa Sunbeach Festival 2022, would be suspended.
A spokesperson for the festival said: “Due to the inclement weather that occurred during the early hours of August 13 and with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of those attending as well as workers and artists gathered for the Medusa Festival, the festival organisers are suspending its activity for the time being.
“The concert venue has been vacated as a preventative measure to facilitate the work of the emergency services and police.”
