Isayama has built the story of AoT as if he knew every twists and turn, even before penning it down. He has laid the groundwork far in advance, with a level of precision that demonstrates his storytelling prowess. One of the most impressive aspects of Isayama’s foreshadowing is that these details misdirect readers to interpret them one way initially.
But upon revisiting the story, the true importance of these moments becomes starkly clear. In this story, foreshadowing abounds in even the most unexpected places, in images, dialogue, opening/ ending songs – the list goes on. However, the following list has filtered out the best ones.
10 Eren’s Turn As The Bad Guy
In Season 1, Episode 4, Eren and Reiner engage in hand-to-hand combat training, and this scene is indeed an interesting moment. During the training session, Eren and Reiner take turns playing the role of the attacker and the defender.
After Reiner is taken down by Eren, he gets back up and hands the wooden knife to Eren, saying, “Now it’s your turn to be the bad guy.” This line, in hindsight, is a subtle hint at the future development of both characters. In later seasons, particularly in Season 4, Eren and Reiner’s roles become more complex as they face difficult moral dilemmas and are forced to make tough choices.
9 Attack On Titan Season 2 Ending Credits
It’s amazing how the creators managed to sneak in some major spoilers in the ending credits and theme song of Season 2 without anyone realizing it at the time! The visuals of the Birds at Dusk song revealed surprising details about the Rumbling and the origin of the Eldian race through Fritz’s three daughters, who consumed Ymir’s flesh.
Of course, these well-concealed spoilers only clicked into place for fans after watching the first half of Season 4 or devouring the entire manga. The Rumbling and Ymir’s tragic past turned out to be key factors in understanding the full scope of the story, especially this particular scene.
8 Levi Says Eren Is A Monster In Season 1
In Season 1, Episode 19, Levi and his squad discuss the potential threat Eren poses and whether or not to trust him. Levi then says that he can sense something ominous about Eren being a monster, not solely because of his Titan powers.
Little did we know just how spot-on his words would be. Fast forward to the later seasons, and Eren’s actions take a darker turn. The once-heroic protagonist shows his monstrous side, initiating the Rumbling and causing mass destruction.
7 Grisha’s Basement
From the very beginning, Grisha’s basement loomed as the ultimate mystery. It was like a Pandora’s box, filled with secrets, just waiting to be unlocked. Fans spent countless hours theorizing what could be hidden in that seemingly ordinary room.
When Eren and the gang finally made their way into the basement, it was mind-blowing. All the biggest mysteries of the show came crashing down at once. And no one would have guessed about Marley and the political game that had been going on for eons.
6 Eren’s Reaction To Sasha’s Death
This is a subtle foreshadowing but a very important one that may have been confusing. In the early parts of season 4, when Gabi kills Sasha, we see Eren laughing hysterically. As we progress further into the later installments of the final season, we know the reason why. Eren had been actually the slave to the AOT loop, where he couldn’t change the future.
Eren’s laughter can also be interpreted as a coping mechanism, masking the guilt and pain he feels for having played a role in Sasha’s death. This guilt becomes more evident, ultimately contributing to Eren’s decision to pursue the Rumbling and sacrifice himself for what he believes to be the greater good.
5 Mikasa’s Headaches
Mikasa’s headaches were constantly a thing for the past four seasons. Some fans may have even fallen for Eren’s bluff, thinking her headaches were due to her Ackerman lineage and obligation to obey the Founding Titan. The finale, though, reveals that it was Ymir who was looking inside Mikasa’s mind that caused her headaches all along.
Ymir’s relationship with Fritz was actually very similar to Eren and Mikasa’s, but the former was a slave to love. Curious about the choices Mikasa would make, Ymir saw her as the pawn to ending the cycle of Titans and unlocking her own freedom. This headache is what led to the bitter ending and a shocking plot twist. Despite the foreshadowing, many fans didn’t pay much attention to it, brushing the headache off as a minor detail.
4 Attack Titan’s Ability To Influence The Timeline
Let’s not forget that in the early days of the series, we all thought the Attack Titan was just a mad, berserk beast at best! Meanwhile, other Titans seemed to have special powers and uniqueness. This changed in season 3 that left fans scratching their heads.
In the conversation between young Grisha Yeager and Eren Kruger (Season 3, Episode 21), Kruger casually mentions saving Mikasa and Armin, which foreshadows a critical aspect of the Attack Titan’s power: the ability to control or manipulate memories from both the past and future. We can now appreciate this scene as the Attack Titan (Eren) is the master player in the grand scheme of things.
3 Kissing Historia’s Hand
Eren’s reaction is one of shock and rage when he kisses Historia Reiss’s hand during her coronation as queen. He experiences a sudden rush of memories from his father, Grisha Yeager. These memories reveal critical information about his father’s past and the origins of the Titans.
Eren realizes that the world is much more complex than he initially thought. This new knowledge greatly impacts Eren’s personality and shapes his actions in the subsequent seasons. The look on his face serves as the first clue that he may become the antagonist of the show from this point forward.
2 The Dream
In chapter 139, Mikasa expresses her love in an alternate-reality dream that Eren is showing her. As she leaves, she tells him, “See you later, Eren.” This line is significant for several reasons. First, it symbolizes Mikasa’s acceptance of Eren’s death and her willingness to move forward with her life while still cherishing the memories and feelings she had for him.
Second, the phrase “See you later, Eren” connects back to the very first chapter of the manga, where Eren wakes up from a dream crying, and Mikasa asks him why. This dream includes images of events that will happen later in the series and also the biggest twist in the finale, where Mikasa frees him out of misery.
1 The Giant Tree: A Hint Of Unbroken Titan Cycle
Many years have passed since Eren Yeager’s death, and the world of Attack on Titan has seen some significant changes. On Paradis Island, where once the scars of war and destruction were all too apparent, nature has taken over, and a lush forest now covers the land. At the heart of this verdant expanse, a mighty tree has sprung up right at Eren’s burial site.
We find a curious young boy stumbling upon this colossal tree. He gazes up at its tallness, seemingly unaware of the potential implications of his discovery. This draws an unmistakable parallel to Ymir’s encounter with a similar tree when she first gained the Founding Titan’s power. While the presence of titan powers is foreshadowed, it remains unclear whether Isayama Hajime intends for this boy to inherit it. The possibility of another vicious cycle unfolding is left open to the reader’s interpretation.
