It’s surprising, considering the source material, but even the haters have had to admit that Barbie seems like an anomaly and will be much more than anyone could’ve expected. Far from a toy company cash grab, Barbie is directed by acclaimed actor and auteur Greta Gerwig and co-written with her partner, yet another heavily lauded auteur, Noah Baumbach.

The team behind Frances Ha and White Noise have also assembled a veritable ‘Avengers’ of the best actors and hottest celebrities today — Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, Emerald Fennell, Scott Evans, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, and many more. Rather than placate traditional toy-to-film adaptations, Gerwig is going big with something very meta and very liberating. As the tagline reads, “To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”
