The EP4 showcases the perfect blend of tradition and innovation

Twelve apprentices at Audi’s Neckarsulm site have breathed new life into a 1971 NSU Prinz 4L through an electrified renovation to celebrate the factory’s 150th anniversary. The project, aptly named EP4 — E for electric drive and P4 for the NSU Prinz 4 model — showcases the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. It’s also one of the coolest concepts in modern history — at least we think so.

The talented apprentices, from diverse fields such as automotive mechatronics, bodywork, and vehicle construction mechanics and painting, resurrected this iconic classic from its long hibernation. They replaced the old powertrain with components from an Audi e-tron and an Audi Q7 TFSIe quattro, culminating in an impressive and emission-free 240-hp electric motor that now resides where the original 30-hp gasoline engine once sat. That’s in the rear, just in case you were wondering…
The team had to undertake extensive modifications to the chassis and bodywork to accommodate the considerable upgrade in performance. The EP4’s new skeleton includes a modified floor pan from an Audi A1, complete with brakes and axles. Its body, significantly widened — aka wide-bodied — and decked out in Audi’s Suzuka Grey and Brilliant Black, proudly and widely displays its historic roots while demonstrating its new power.

The vehicle’s aesthetics hint at its impressive capabilities, with a sporty rear wing, Signal Yellow accents, and muscular fenders. Apprentice automotive painter Cynthia Huster stated, “We wanted the EP4’s performance to be visible from every angle,” pointing out that the rear wing is uniquely attached to the roll cage, penetrating the rear window.
The interior design is stripped back, minimalist, and racing-ready, with Recaro Podium bucket seats and a single-board computer serving as instruments and displays. Contrasting the dark surroundings, a Signal Yellow roll cage catches the eye and adds an exciting flair.

Throughout this endeavor, the apprentices demonstrated their acquired skills and explored advanced technologies like 3D printing and working with carbon fibre. The undertaking provided them with opportunities for practical application, teamwork, and engaging with various experts within the company, reflecting the broader commitment of Audi to invest in young talent.
Audi Board Member for Human Resources, Xavier Ros, commended the apprentices for their admirable commitment and creativity. He said this project is a testament to the strong future of Audi, driven by the passion and ingenuity of their young talent.
The EP4, therefore, stands not just as a spectacular showcase of skills but also as a symbol of a continuing story. It bridges the gap between the historic charm of the NSU vehicles and the anticipation for the coming all-electric chapters in Audi’s journey. The tale of Audi’s Neckarsulm site, once a symbol of the German “Wirtschaftswunder” (Miracle on the Rhine), continues to inspire car enthusiasts as it steers into an electrified future. By the way, this is where Audi Sport (RS) vehicles are assembled. It’s nice – you should visit it some day.
