Australia-based cruise line Aurora Expeditions has this week released its inaugural Impact Report. The report is titled ‘Protecting the world’s wild places’ and marks the first of its kind for the expedition cruise line.
“We are incredibly proud to release our first Impact Report, which outlines our commitment to sustainability and our vision to be the global leader in sustainable expedition travel,” commented Michael Heath, CEO of Aurora Expeditions in a press release earlier this week.
“This is about transparency and accountability for us as a business, and acknowledging where we are on our sustainability journey. We are acutely aware of the planet’s rapidly evolving climate crisis and the urgency with which we must all work together to help protect and regenerate our shared planet,” added Heath. “Expedition travel holds a unique opportunity to educate and inspire people, which we believe is pivotal to safeguarding the wild and awe-inspiring places we visit.”
Aurora Expeditions was founded 32 years ago and has been taking passengers on expeditions to some of the world’s most fragile and untouched wilderness destinations around the globe — which is why the operator feels it has a unique responsibility to ensure it is doing as much as possible to protect these ecosystems.
The first Impact Report highlights the company’s efforts to implement sustainable practices across its business as well as future company goals. Some of the initiatives in the report included supporting seven of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, achieving 100 percent Climate Neutral status, a focus on education for passengers via its onboard expert team, and leading projects including the Antarctic Climate Expedition.
The inaugural Impact Report acknowledges that the company’s emissions reduction is ongoing, committing to be part of the movement of innovative thought leaders and advocating for the development of new technology that makes the expedition cruise industry more sustainable.
The report also showcases that the company’s mission is still ongoing but strives to showcase what the operator is doing to further its goals and foster a more sustainable future for the cruise industry as a whole. The full Impact Report is available for public consumption on the official Aurora Expeditions website.
