Australia and India qualified for the WTC Final after finishing top two in ICC Test Rankings during the World Test Championships 2021-23 cycle. Both sides squared off during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in February-March, which India dominated with a 2-1 series win.
Injury update Josh Hazlewood is among the big absentees for the WTC Final as the bowler failed to reach full fitness after getting injured during the IPL 2023. Rohit Sharma also had an injury scare as his thumb was injured during a practice session.
AUS vs IND key players
AUS (Wicketkeepers: Alex Carey) Carey is likely to keep stumps during the final despite a poor show during the Border-Gavaskar series, which saw him score just 56 runs. The batter scored runs at a good rate during the South Africa Tour, where the pitches are more in sync with the one at The Oval.
(Batter: Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Travis Head) Both Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne had little to talk good of from the India series but the duo recently played first-class games in England in order to be battle ready. Labuschagne has been impressive with two centuries in three games.
The southpaw opening pair of Usman Khawaja and David Warner have been in good form with Khawaja also scoring a big hundred in India. Warner individually had a good IPL with six half-centuries. Travis Head had a decent India tour on rank turners and left a good impression before that during the home series as he scored three half-centuries and a century during South Africa and West Indies series.
(All-rounders: Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh) Australia will be spoilt for choices as they have to choose between Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh for the big game. The duo played some impressive innings during the IPL as they have been in great form this season. It won’t be a surprise if they both feature in the line-up as well.
(Bowlers: Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Scott Boland) Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are likely to feel at home at The Oval. Starc, however, had little to speak about his performance at the venue as he took just two wickets in three games at the venue. Skipper Pat Cummins took five wickets in two innings in his only Test at The Oval. Scott Boland may step in for injured Hazlewood and would only be his second Test at the venue.
Nathan Lyon, who took 20-plus wickets in India earlier this year, has been more successful at The Oval with nine wickets in three games, including a four-for. Todd Murphy may feature in the line-up as well if Australia wish to play an extra spinner.
IND (Wicketkeeper: Ishan Kishan, KS Bharat) Ishan Kishan may make his Test debut in the big game as KS Bharat failed to impress during the Border-Gavakar series with the bat.
(Batters: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane) Virat Kohli’s and Shubman Gill’s forms this season makes them big favourites for the game. There remains a question mark on Rohit Sharma’s form but the batter did score a century at the venue in the past.
Cheteshwar Pujara also made the most of his time away from IPL with centuries in the English County while Ajinkya Rahane is expected to bring his domestic form to big game on his return to the national team.
(All-rounders: Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin) Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin are likely to be the two spinners for the final with Jadeja in particular had been effective at the Oval with 11 wickets in two games here. Jadeja also scored a crucial 86 not out against England in 2022.
(Bowlers: Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav) Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj are expected to lead the bowling line-up given their form this season while Shardul Thakur may get the nod ahead of Umesh Yadav due to his ability to bat as well. Notably, Umesh Yadav took six wickets (three in each innings) in the sole Test he played here.

Australia vs IND pitch report
The Oval pitch has become helpful for spinners in the recent past but it does provide pace and bounce early on in the game. The overcast weather in particular will come to assist the pacers but will be an even contest.
