Aussie cricketer Hogg turns on his own as furious row overshadows Ashes win

Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has admitted that Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal should have been overturned after his controversial stumping during England’s second Test defeat on Sunday. The hosts’ chase at Lord’s was finely poised when Alex Carey stumped Bairstow, who had wandered out of his crease thinking the ball had gone dead.

The Aussies won their appeal and Bairstow was declared out, as many felt that it was the deciding point in the game as England were defeated by 43 runs despite Ben Stokes’ defiant 155 – a knock that included nine sixes. However, the innings was overshadowed by the controversial Bairstow stumping as many thought that it was not in the spirit of the game.

The Australian team defended Carey’s actions as it was within the laws, but not all down under felt that the wicket-keeper should have been rewarded for his quick thinking. Hogg, who shined especially in the one-day game during his 12-year career, took to Twitter to criticise the stumping.

Hogg wrote: “Bairstow wicket, Not Out. Spirit of cricket pushed to the boundary. Not attempting a run, end of over, scratched crease then walked for the regulation BS chat between overs between batsman. #ashes #ENGvsAUS.”

He sided with a number of the English players, as Stuart Broad was caught on the stump microphone telling Carey that the stumping is all that he would be remembered for. While the hosts’ star of the innings Stokes claimed that he would not have liked to win in the manner that the Australians did – as the visiting team took a 2-0 lead before the third Test at Headingley.

“I am not disputing the fact it is out because it is out,” Stokes said. “If the shoe was on the other foot I would have put more pressure on the umpires and asked whether they had called over and had a deep think about the whole spirit of the game and would I want to do something like that. For Australia, it was the match-winning moment. Would I want to win a game in that manner? The answer for me is no.”

While Australia captain Pat Cummings smirked as he hit back at Carey’s critics as he told Sky Sports Cricket: “I think Carey saw it happen a few balls previous, there was no pause.

“Catch it and throw at the stumps. I thought it was totally fair play. I know some people disagree but it’s like the catch yesterday. That’s how I saw it.”

Broad, meanwhile, delighted supporters later in the game as he continuously mocked Carey when batting by making sure to point out that he was still in his crease despite the ball very clearly having gone dead, during his imperious partnership with Stokes that gave the hosts a chance at victory.
