Aussies able to share in $2 BILLION for faulty Toyotas

More than 260,000 Toyota owners are being contacted from Monday and invited to register their interest to receive thousands of dollars in compensation.

In April, the Federal Court found that Toyota Hilux, Prado and Fortuner diesel vehicles sold over a five-year span had a defect.

The court also found Toyota had engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct in marketing and selling the cars.

The class action, which could end up with motorists sharing about $2 billion in compensation, alleged the vehicles sold between October 2015 and April 2020 had defective diesel particulate filter systems, leaving owners out of pocket.

The defect caused the vehicles to spill foul-smelling white smoke and decreased fuel efficiency.

Starting from Monday, court-approved notices will be sent via email, text message and post to people who bought one or more of the affected Toyota models.

The messages will invite affected customers to register for compensation as part of the successful class action brought against Toyota.

In a Federal Court judgment, Justice Michael Lee found 264,170 drivers who bought some of the brand’s top-selling cars were eligible for a payout.

Justice Lee found each vehicle was worth 17.5 per cent less than what the average customer paid, and customers were entitled to be reimbursed that difference.
