Australia have smashed the world record in the women’s 4x100m short course relay with Emma McKeon anchoring the team to win gold at the world championships in Melbourne.
The Australians etched their names in the record books, setting a time of three minutes 25.43 seconds to eclipse the Dutch mark of 3:26.53 set in 2014.
McKeon swam the first sub-50 second 100m freestyle split by a woman with a 49.96.
Mollie O’Callaghan, who replaced Leah Neale after the heat swim, kicked off but was back in the field after a big day that included posting the fastest time in the women’s 100m backstroke semi-finals.
The Americans were the pace-setters, with Madi Wilson and Meg Harris pegging back the lead.
McKeon, owner of 11 Olympic medals, then swam a blistering final leg to overhaul the Americans to take gold with Canada third.
