During the modern NBA era, it’s become normal for superstars to request trades.
Damian Lillard is the latest example.
The Portland Trailblazers All-Star requested a trade from the organization after 11 seasons in hope of landing with a championship contender. According to reports, his ideal landing spot is the Miami Heat.
While appearing on The Ringer’s NBA Show on Monday, free agent Austin Rivers explained why star trade demands are bad for the league.
“If you were a free agent, then you could choose where you were gonna go,”Lillard said “… This started with James [Harden] and Ben [Simmons] and all these guys doing this s***. It’s bad for the league.
“Regardless of how good of a player you are, man, the NBA is a privilege. If you are a free agent, then you can choose where you wanna go, that’s the business. But when you’re not, and you sign a deal, man, that’s part of the business, bro. If you get traded somewhere, you gotta go play.”
Lillard, 33, is still waiting for a trade to happen.
