Stuart Broad’s last match before his retirement will go to the fifth day after Australia started their run chase superbly against England at The Oval before rain stopped play in the final Ashes Test.

It was Broad and his long-term teammate and friend Jimmy Anderson who came out to bat at the start of the day with England 389-9.

Broad announced his intention to retire after this match on Saturday, which led to an emotional welcome onto the pitch at the start of Sunday, with the Australians giving him a guard of honour.

The bowlers didn’t add many to the overnight total, but Broad did sign off from Test batting in style by hitting his final ball for six before Anderson was dismissed by Todd Murphy.

This left the tourists requiring 384 to win and win the series 3-1, while England needed to bowl them out and level up at 2-2.

No team has ever chased more than 263 to win a Test at The Oval, so the odds were in England’s favour as they returned to the field, but the Aussie openers had other ideas.

Usman Khawaja and David Warner batted solidly and were largely untroubled by six different English bowlers as the home side searched for a breakthrough.

Australia reached 135-0 by Sunday afternoon as the pair put on comfortably the highest opening stand of the series, Warner unbeaten on 58 and Khawaja steadily reaching 69 as his impressive tour continued.

England were getting frustrated and then rain frustrated the spectators as the teams were forced off the field due to rain shortly before 3pm.

The downpour only got heavier as the afternoon went on and play was abandoned for the day, leaving Australia requiring 249 more runs to win the match on Monday with 10 wickets remaining.

Broad will hope to finish his career with a bang on Monday in London and help England level the series, although it will be Australia who retain the Ashes regardless.

On his retirement, the 37-year-old wrote in the Daily Mail: ‘I am really content with everything I have achieved in the game and ultimately the decision came down to wanting to leave the game still loving it.

‘Ashes cricket has brought out the best in me, I love the energy of the battle against Australia, the crowd involvement, and I am proud to have 150 Test wickets against them.

‘Ultimately, these are the memories I will hold with me for the rest of my life.’
