The Australia players were confronted by MCC members in the Lord’s pavilion after Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal on the final day of the second Ashes Test.
While Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were greeted by applause and cheers as they came in for the lunch interval, the Australians received a largely frosty reception.
Usman Khawaja and David Warner were pulled away by security after exchanging words with MCC members, who were unhappy after England’s Bairstow was controversially stumped by Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Bairstow had ducked under a bouncer and dozily strolled out of his crease as Carey collected the ball and hit the stumps with an underarm throw.
While the dismissal was in the laws of the game, Australia captain Pat Cummins could have chosen to withdraw the appeal as it has been suggested it was against the spirit of cricket.
‘I’ve never seen scenes like that, particularly in the Long Room, never mind all the way around the ground,’ ex-England captain Eoin Morgan said.
‘There is a huge sense of frustration – I can’t understand why. It’s complete naivety around what has happened around Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal – he’s stumped!’
Australia legend Ricky Ponting added: ‘It’s a stumping, not a run-out – enough said. Jonny did the wrong thing and he’s paid with losing his wicket in an Ashes Test match.’
Bairstow’s departure left England 193-6 as they chase 371 to level the five-match series.
But Stokes gave England fresh hope before the lunch break, smashing three successive sixes on his way to a 13th Test century.
England’s captain and Stuart Broad had put on 50 in five overs before the interval, with the hosts still requiring 128 to win and Australia seeking four more wickets.
