Award-winning UK beach offers visitors curries while watching dolphins swim

AN amazing little-known beach is not only home to some of the clearest seas in the UK, but also some rare Caribbean shells and one of the tastiest curries in the country too.

Devon is home to some of the most picturesque shores that the United Kingdom has to offer, but one beach provides visitors with a unique experience that can’t be found anywhere else.

Barricane beach in Woolacombe is a favourite among locals and has even been declared a site of “special interest”.

That’s due to the “tons of beautiful, tiny shells of all shapes and colours that wash up with the tide,” according to Woolacombe Tourism.

The shells are said to travel on currents through the sea from the Caribbean, before washing up on the shores of the relatively small inlet.

Because of this, some people even know Barricane as “Shell beach” and will come to explore its collection of exotic shingle that can’t be found in many other places in the UK.

The beach isn’t entirely covered with shingle however, as there is golden sand, especially at low tide, as well as plenty of rock pools waiting to be explored.

Wildlife is also a big draw to the area, with the seas around Woolacombe frequently visited by common dolphins and seals while whales are sometimes spotted too.

Wildsea Devon were lucky enough to spot some dolphins in the sea just off the coast, and shared a video on Twitter, in which they described it as “a special sight”.

Barricane has also received a Marine Conservation Society award, meaning it is one of few beaches in the country to have met the stringent criteria required to qualify.

Tiktoker Cristina Pectu (@cristinaa.pectu) is someone who took up the Marine Conservation Society’s recommendation and visited the beach herself.

In a video she shared online, she described it as a place in Devon, “you need to visit.”

She’s not alone, with a lot of people drawn to the small bay by its on-site cafe that not only serves sandwiches and cakes during the day, but amazing Sri Lankan curries in the evenings.

Locals and visitors alike turn up during the summer months to sit on the beach with a bowl of delicious curry, while watching the deep orange sunsets that the west coast is often treated to.

The Barricane Beach Cafe has a fast-growing reputation, with people raving about their food.

One person wrote on TripAdvisor last summer: “Every bit as good as its reputation, delicious tasty food, clearly hugely popular, beach was packed and pretty much everyone was talking about ‘the curry’!”

Another added: “The evening curries are amazing – just bring a cold bottle with you and enjoy the evening sunset. The tiger prawn salad at lunch is also amazing!”

Along with the food, people turn up to enjoy swimming and other water sports.

The beach’s crystal clear blue sea is ideal for a splash and Woolacombe.co.uk describe it as “ideal for swimmers and surfers”.

A night in a hotel in Woolacombe can be found from around £50pp per night, although camping in the area is a more affordable option.

Tent pitches in the area start from as little as £10 per night.
