When he was arrested later on Wednesday evening, he failed a breathalyser and also had cannabis in his system, police said.

The victim was named as Camilla Christina Pamdahl, 46, from Sweden, who was on holiday with her five-year-old daughter.

Reports said Camilla had left the child with a babysitter at her hotel so she could go shopping.

She was hit on a pedestrian crossing in the resort at around 5.30pm.

“A young man driving the rental buggy overtook a stopped car, and hit the woman,” police said.

Camilla was taken to hospital in Famagusta but could not be saved.

Social workers and a child psychologist were looking after the victim’s young daughter until her father arrived on the island.
