Bale answers retirement U-turn question as Wrexham speculation grows

Gareth Bale has issued a five-word response when asked directly if he was planning on coming out of retirement to play for Wrexham next season. The Welsh legend hung up his boots in January following a disappointing World Cup campaign with his country, but following promotion to League Two for the side owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, his future has been up in the air.

On Tuesday, McElhenney took to Twitter to post a video that Bale had sent to congratulate him on his achievements with Wrexham. The former Tottenham and Real Madrid star said: “Hi, Rob. Just want to congratulate you on your promotion and everything you’re doing at Wrexham.”

McElhenney captioned the video with a cheeky proposal for the 33-year-old: “Hey, @GarethBale11, let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend four hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season.”

Later in the day, Bale suggested he may be open to hearing what the American owner has to say, writing: “Depends what course…” As Reynolds also suggested that they would try all that they could to bring him to north Wales.

Despite the two Hollywood stars pestering Bale on social media to come out of retirement like Ben Foster did in his sensational move in the tail-end of the season, it appears that he is unlikely to be plying his trade at the Racecourse next season.

“No I don’t think so,” Bale replied to broadcaster Laura Woods when asked if he was planning on playing for Wrexham next season at the UK Sport Industry Awards 2023.
