Bamburgh has been crowned the UK’s best seaside town for a staycation in 2022, as voted for by holidaymakers in a new Which? survey.
The study, which included 4,303 respondents, ranked coastal spots across a range of factors such as hotel prices, beaches, food and drink options, the seafront, tourist attractions, shopping, scenery, and value for money, with Bamburgh scoring an impressive 87%.
It’s not surprising that the Northumberland town has proven so popular. It actually held the title in Which’s 2021 rankings, and recently was revealed as having one of Europe’s top 10 beaches. Oh, and not to mention that it’s one of our top picks of the UK’s prettiest seaside towns to have on your staycation radar.

Bamburgh Beach has a pristine, golden sandy beach that draws in sun-seekers during the summer months, which survey respondents described as ‘spectacular’ and ‘imposing’, all enhanced by the fact that the shore looks out to the historic Bamburgh Castle sitting on a nearby cliff.
(The region is popular with those looking for scenic walks).
During the winter months, it’s even been tipped as one of the best UK places for seeing the Northern Lights.
It wasn’t just Bamburgh that proved a hit of course.

Welsh coastal spots were also popular with holidaymakers, as three of the top six seaside towns were in Wales.
Llandudno claimed the silver medal with a score of 86%, being praised by holidaymakers for the ‘incomparable’ views to be found at the Great Orme, a limestone headland rising to nearly 700ft (you can visit the top either on foot or by taking a cable car), as well as its budget-friendly offerings when it came to hotels, food and drink.
St Andrews in Scotland took the third podium spot with a score of 84%, and was one of three places to score five stars for food and drink thanks to the plethora of cafes and restaurants nestled throughout the city.

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said: “The British seaside hasn’t boomed like this since the 1960s. Holidaymakers had such a fantastic time in their caravans, tents and beach lodges over the past two years that a coastal break on home shores is on the cards for many, even with restrictions on overseas travel lifted.
“Prices for a UK stay have increased, but there’s no need to pay over the odds. For a holiday on a budget it’s best to aim for an off-season trip. Head to one of the many well priced resorts with your bucket and spade, an empty stomach for the candyfloss and a pile of 2p coins and go make your fortune on the slots.”
