Banish bathroom limescale with the ‘best’ cheap cupboard staple

Limescale will often appear around taps, in the toilet or even in between bathroom tiles, and it can look unsightly.

It is always better to prevent it in the first place, although this can be tricky, and so water softener experts at Kind Water have shared the “best” way to remove limescale from showers.

The pros said: “Fill a bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water, spraying the vinegar solution directly onto the areas affected by limescale in the shower.

“Let the solution sit for about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the vinegar to break down the limescale.”

Next, scrub the affected areas with a sponge or brush, really focusing on the limescale to help remove it before rinsing it with water to remove vinegar residue.

White vinegar can dissolve limescale and is a great alternative for stronger, harsher chemicals due to its acetic acid content.

It can be purchased for less than £1 from a variety of supermarkets and retailers including B&M and Home Bargains.

Not only can the eco-friendly product remove limescale from the shower itself, it can also be used to remove water marks and stains from the shower head.

The experts explained: “Fill a plastic bag or container large enough to fit the shower head with white vinegar and submerge it in the white vinegar, ensuring that it is fully covered.

“Secure the bag or container in place, allowing the shower head to soak in the white vinegar for several hours or overnight.”

Once the time is up, remove it from the solution and scrub it gently with a brush to dislodge any remaining limescale.

This same method can also be used if you have any limescale building up around taps, making sure to secure the bag in place.

If you spot limescale building up in the bottom of the toilet, pour a cup of vinegar into the bowl and let it work overnight.

In the morning, sprinkle some baking soda onto the water and give the toilet a good scrub which would remove any limescale on the bottom and sides.

The water experts continued: “To prevent limescale build up, wipe down your shower surfaces after each use to remove excess moisture.

“Consider using a shower head with built-in anti-limescale features or install a water softener system to reduce mineral deposits. Make sure to also regularly clean and maintain your shower to minimise limescale accumulation.”
