Desiree Ellis’ charges were crowned African champions for the first time ever as they beat hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final in July.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) had promised R9.2 million as the bonus for Banyana Banyana if they won the WAFCON.

And the country’s FA fulfilled that promise while the Sport, Arts and Culture department added R5.8 million on top of that R9.2 million.

Now, Sport Minister Nathi Mthethwa has revealed that the department met with the national government after the R5.8 million bonus was pledged.

“We are here to announce that the national government’s contribution to the team has been R15 million that comes to the national government,” Mthethwa told reporters.

“And you remember the president said, ‘yes, R5.8 million but what I am saying is, it should be more than R5.8 million’.”

“So, you can make your calculations; our R5.8 [million] plus… then R15 million. It means that R9.2 million was added. And this is not taking into account the R9.2 million we spoke about earlier on which comes from the tournament,” added Mthethwa.
