The new $146,000,000 Barbie movie used so much pink paint it sparked a global shortage, according to its production designer.
Sarah Greenwood, who is British and has been nominated for an Oscar six times for films including Atonement and Beauty And The Beast, said paint firm Rosco used up all of the bright fuchsia shade.
“The world ran out of pink,” she claimed.
Director Greta Gerwig was determined to create full-sized Barbie sets for stars Margot Robbie, who plays the eponymous doll, and Ryan Gosling, who is her boyfriend Ken.
Everything had to be daubed in real colour for “authentic artificiality” rather than created using special effects.
Gerwig told Architectural Digest magazine: “I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything to be almost too much.
“I didn’t want to forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl.”
Developers at Rosco, one of the world’s largest suppliers, used more than 100 existing different pink colours and blended them to around ten Barbie shades.
But they needed so much to cover the vast sets at the Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, that they sparked a worldwide shortage in some shades, including fluorescent fuchsia.
Greenwood said: “Pink was a constant fight. You put it next to furniture or fabric and it just flattens out.”
Various shades of the colour were used in Barbie’s Dreamhouse, which features a pink slide, pink shower and pink bed. The movie has sparked a ’Barbiecore’ trend that will see pink clothing and accessories flood stores after the film opens.
Gerwig added: “I was creating the alternate universe of Barbie Land. I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses. Why walk downstairs when you can slide into your pool There are no walls and no doors. Dreamhouses assume that you never have anything you wish was private. There is no place to hide.”
A Warner Bros source said: “This is going to be the blockbuster hit of the summer.
“You won’t be able to go anywhere without seeing pink. If people want to recreate the look in their own homes there will be several Barbie shades going on sale. It’s going to be a plastic fantastic summer.”
The movie’s plot revolves around Barbie leaving her perfect world and venturing into the real world.
“It’s fun, fabulous and surprisingly moving,” the source said. “It comes down to Barbie learning the meaning of true beauty and that it is more than skin deep.”
