It’s official, moviegoers across the world have Barbie fever. Fans couldn’t get enough of seeing Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in theaters, during its opening weekend. The film succeeded twofold in turnout. First, audience reception garnered Gerwig’s latest venture an “A” CinemaScore along with a 90% Tomatometer rating and audience score, at the time of this writing. Second, there are those hefty box office receipts. Barbie was predicted to make upwards of $165 million at the global box office, and the film came very close to doing just that.

Barbie brought in a staggering $337 million worldwide, which includes its three-day opening weekend (Friday-Sunday) and advance screenings held on the Wednesday and Thursday beforehand (per Box Office Mojo). Domestically, Gerwig’s tale of the famous Mattel doll managed to make $155 million in the United States, with foreign numbers coming in at an even more impressive $182 million.

The film’s opening weekend is easily the biggest success of the 2023 summer box office. Domestically, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had set the summertime bar with its $121-million opening weekend, but Barbie left the animated Miles Morales adventure eating the dust of her bright pink convertible. And Barbie even bested The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $146 million, which had been the best opening weekend in the United States during 2023 until Ken and Barbie decided to visit the real world.

Even opening up against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer didn’t slow Barbie’s roll at the box office. And Oppenheimer didn’t perform too shabby in its own right. However, Nolan’s historical tale of J. Robert Oppenheimer only managed to make $174 million worldwide ($80.5 million domestically, $93.6 million internationally), but it just couldn’t keep pace with the Mattel doll’s big-screen adaptation.

Barbie also set a number of records on its way to box office supremacy. According to Deadline, the film made the largest amount of money in advance sales for Warner Bros. ever at $49.5 million. Barbie also marks the best opening by a female director (domestically). The previous record of $153.4 million was held by Captain Marvel’s Anna Boden. However, Greta Gerwig did it alone while Boden shares directing credit on the 2019 MCU film with Ryan Fleck.

Also, Gerwig has outdone herself at the box office. Prior to Barbie, Gerwig’s top domestic debut was achieved by 2019’s Little Women, which opened with $16.8 million in the U.S. It’s also the biggest box office opening (domestically) for both Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad had been her best) and Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049 had been his best). Lastly, Barbie represents the biggest opening weekend for a movie based on characters originating as a toy. Transformers: Dark of the Moon previously held that record with $115.9 million.

Sound of Freedom takes the bronze medal at the weekend’s domestic box office with $20.1 million, while Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One surprisingly slides all the way from first to fourth during its second weekend of action with $19.5 million. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny rounds out the Top 5 with $6.7 million.
