Barbie Trailer Reveals John Cena Has Joined the Cast

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new trailer along with a slew of character posters for Barbie, the Greta Gerwig-directed film based on the popular Mattel doll. While the promotional materials provide a good look at the movie along with many of its characters, consisting of different versions of Barbie and Ken, there was another interesting reveal that eagle-eyed viewers also noticed. The credits featured in the trailer show the name John Cena, revealing that he’s a part of the cast. This hadn’t been previously announced by the studio or Cena.

However, Cena is noticeably absent from the trailer itself, so his role remains a mystery at this time. Given what is shown in the trailer, however, it seems possible that Cena could be featured as another version of Ken, though that remains to be seen. It’s worth noting that he was also absent from the series of character posters released by the studio that introduces the film’s “Barbies and Kens.” That could be interpreted as Cena having a role in the film that is not one of the Kens, but all we can do for now is speculate.

The character posters reveal Margot Robbie’s Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling’s Ken, with the two leading the cast of Barbies and Kens. Other stars playing versions of Barbie include Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Ana Cruz Kayne, Dua Lipa, Alexandra Shipp, Rita Aryu, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan. Meanwhile, Michael Cera will play a character named Allan, while other Kens include Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, and Simu Liu. Those playing “human” characters include America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Ariana Greenblatt, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, and Jamie Demetriou.

Barbie Is Unlike Any Movie You’ve Ever Seen

It’s clear from the new trailer alone that Greta Gerwig has something special in store for viewers with Barbie. Directed by Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach, the film picks up with Robbie’s Barbie getting kicked out of “Barbie Land” for being a less-than-perfect doll. In order to find happiness, she sets off for the human world. Apparently, the wild film was just as much fun to work on as it looks.

“It was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,” Emma Mackey said of working on Barbie, via Total Film. “It was wonderful. It’s being helmed by people who know what they’re doing and who care and who are in the best possible circumstances to do their job.”

Barbie will be released in movie theaters on July 21, 2023. You can view the new trailer below.
