Barmy Army jeer at ‘w*****’ at Smith before dismissal by Broad gives England advantage

A late flurry of wickets, including that of Steve Smith, has given England a slight advantage going into the final day of the first Ashes Test against Australia.

Chasing 281 to win at Edgbaston, the visitors were left at 107-3 at stumps on day four with Stuart Broad getting what could be the key wicket of Smith, who was caught behind by Jonny Bairstow for a total of just six.

Smith did a mighty fine job of blocking out the taunting England fans when the Ashes were last played in Blighty in 2019, but so far it appears they’re getting to him.

The former Aussie captain was greeted with repeated jeers of ‘w*****’ by the Barmy Army, who also tormented him with ‘cried on the telly’ chants in reference to his tearful apology for his part in the ‘Sandpaper Gate’ scandal in 2018.

And the jeers may have had some effect with Smith posting scores of just 16 and six in both of his innings after nicking Broad’s fine delivery.

Broad also claimed the wicket of Marcus Labuschagne for 13, while Ollie Robinson got the breakthrough when David Warner was caught behind by Bairstow.

It makes for a mouth-watering day five, as Australia need 178 more runs to win with seven wickets to spare.

More will follow.
