Bask in the Glory That Is Tracee Ellis Ross’s Cloud Hair

Last year, Allure staff editor Jihan Forbes asked an important question about embracing natural hair and the pressure Black women feel to make it look a certain defined, “done” way: “If part of loving one’s natural kinks is about rejecting Eurocentric beauty standards, why not let your crown be gorgeously cloud-like, from root to tip?” She made the argument — one you can’t really argue with — that frizzy hair that resembles cotton candy is not only OK but beautiful, and the visibility of such styles on social media “can really influence and help change these antiquated standards rooted in white supremacy.” And it seems Tracee Ellis Ross got — and is happy to spread — the message.

On Tuesday, February 8, the actor and founder of Pattern said a lot without saying anything at all when she posted a super quick video to her Instagram grid. In it, Ross is simply looking at the camera, her sunlit, makeup-free face framed by a soft, brushed-out, fluffy mass of hair. She doesn’t speak in the two-second clip, but the emoji she used for the caption more or less says it all: ☁️

Ross didn’t have to write anything to send the message that her hair — all natural hair — is gorgeous at its puffiest, frizziest, wispiest. But she has previously shared that she hadn’t always accepted and celebrated her hair. “When I was a teen, I didn’t understand it so I tried everything under the sun to make it do what I thought it should,” she wrote in the caption of a 2020 Instagram post. “I’ve always said that my journey to self acceptance can be chronicled through my journey with my hair. Taking the time to accept, understand and love my hair mirrors the relationship I have with myself. I have grown to love and appreciate my hair in all of its seasons. Because hair love IS self love.”

Friends and fans commenting on the latest post are more than happy to confirm how lovely she looks. “Much gloriousness here ❤️,” January Jones wrote, while a fan commented, “Love you natural hair Simply beautiful and Priceless ❤️❤️❤️????????????????????????????.”

It was just several hours earlier that Ross had been wearing her hair in sleek yet full braided bun to announce this year’s Oscar nominees and garner just as many compliments — only proving that there’s no wrong way to wear your hair, no better or worse way, no more or less acceptable way. And we can’t wait to see the next time she shares her fabulous “☁️” hair with us.
