After the Denver Nuggets went up 2-0 over LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, head coach Michael Malone went viral with a golden soundbite.

The Nuggets’ leader told the media to “put that in your pipe and smoke it,” referencing the lopsided media attention focussed toward the Lakers.

Malone is wearing a shirt that bears that message during Thursday’s championship parade in Denver.

“Confirmed: Parade ready,” the team wrote as the caption to their photo on Twitter.

The basketball world is loving this shirt.

“Coach Malone in party mode,” one fan wrote.

“I can confirm fans have put plenty in their pipes & are smokin’ away at Civic Center Park for this rally,” another said.

“Great shirt for a Denver parade. There will be lots of that going on,” another added.

Here are Malone’s full comments that birthed this famous quote:

“A lot of our guys, to be honest, they may not admit this or not. You know, you win game one of the playoffs and all everybody talked about was the Lakers. Let’s be honest, that was a national narrative was, hey the Lakers were fine. They’re down 1–0 but they figured something out. No one talked about Nikola just had a historic performance. He’s got 13 triple-doubles now, third all-time. What he’s doing is just incredible, but the narrative wasn’t about the Nuggets. The narrative wasn’t about Nikola. The narrative was about the Lakers and their adjustments. So you know, you put that in your pipe, you smoke it, and you come back and you know what, we’re going to go up 2–0.”

Fortunately for the Nuggets, Malone was able to back up this talk as he led his team to a sweep over the Lakers and a five-game victory over the Miami Heat in the Finals — bringing Denver its first ever NBA title.

It’s clear that Malone is enjoying this day as much as anyone around the Nuggets organization.
